I've been asked turn an old opera to a game. Professor Cat helped me choose the opera and I chose Wagner Lohengrin.
I made the game out of this opera and I changed and made up so much stuff in order to turn it to an enjoyable game. Although I changed and added stuff, I tried to maintain the main ideas of the opera like keeping Lohengrin's identity hidden and keeping the main characters active in the game's story.
Anyway, here is the "Lohengrin: The Protector of Brabant" game:
Lohengrin The Protector of Brabant
I took a look at the opera Lohengrin written by Richard Wagner and first performed in 1850. The opera has a simple yet beautiful story. The opera is very turnable to a game. Therefore, I decided to use it in this assignment. I will explain the technical specifications, the game play, and the game story. I will call the game Lohengrin The Protector of Brabant.
First, the technical specifications. The game will be a 3D game developed by Unreal Engine. It will be developed for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. The game will be in steady 60 frames for the PC and 30 frames for both PS4 and Xbox One. The resolution will be 1080 pixels for all platforms.
Second, the game play. Playing the game will be in third-person view. The character will be able to move in all 3D directions. The character will be able to jump, perform a fast attack with the sword, perform a heavy attack with the sword, perform a special attack with the sword, and guard. The environment will be an open world.
Thirdly and the most important part is the game story. The game will have three episodes. The first episode will be titled like this, Lohengrin The Protector of Brabant: Finding the Princess. The first episode will be about the Lohengrin the Holy Grail knight who was sent to a mission by his father King Parsifal coming from Monsalvat. The mission is to protect an unjustly accused woman, princess. The game start and the player starts playing with Lohengrin who’s the main character in this game. The player must arrive to Brabant in order to save the princess and finish the episode. The player will start moving from Monsalvat to Brabant. In Monsalvat, the player will meet people whom will be advising, giving information, and giving items to Lohengrin. The player will not be able to reach Brabant without collecting items and informations about the road. The road will be revealed in the map the Lohengrin has. In this road, Lohengrin will find items, treasures, and enemies. The player most fight enemies, collect items, and upgrade skills and the abilities by fighting and collecting treasures. Lohengrin will meet a mysterious magician who will help him upgrade his sword ability in exchange of the treasures that the player finds. The skills ,on the other hand; will be upgraded by fighting enemies. The enemies are either troops from nearby hostile kingdoms or monsters. Once the player passes all the obstacles and reaches Brabant, Lohengrin will meet the princess in the right moment while she is praying to God to show a champion and her hero to fight and defeat Count Friedrich von Telramund. The player will play the last battle in episode one versus Telramund and must win. Episode one ends after defeating Telramund.
Episode two title is Lohengrin The Protector of Brabant: Hungarians’ downfall. It will start by explaining some details of who is Telramund and why was the princess praying to God to send her the hero. The explanation starts with the arrival of King Henry the Fowler to Brabant where he has assembled the German tribes in order to banish the marauding Hungarians from his land. The king also needs to solve a conflict about the disappearance of Gottfried the child-Duke of Brabant. The Duke's guardian Telramund accused the Duke's sister, Elsa (the princess), of killing her brother in order to become the Duchess of Brabant. Telramund asks the King to punish Elsa and to make him the new Duke of Brabant. The king calls Elsa and ask her about what happened to her brother, Elsa only answers with her sniveling about her dead brother. The king says that this can not be solved except through ordeal by combat*.
*Trial by combat was a method of Germanic law to settle accusations in the absence of witnesses or a confession in which two parties in dispute fought in single combat; the winner of the fight was proclaimed to be right (Wikipedia, Trial by combat).
At this moment, Elsa prays to God to send her a great champion, the hero who will save her and prove that she is not guilty. Lohengrin appears at that moment and offers his help to Elsa in one condition, which is that she never ask him about his name and who is he. Elsa accepts so Lohengrin fights Telramund and wins, as what happened at the end of episode one. The king declares that Telramund is an outlaw and whom even follow him will be considered an outlaw. The king and the people celebrate the victory, Lohengrin asks Elsa to marry him, Elsa agrees, the king announces the weeding for the next day and calls the mysterious knight (Lohengrin) the great knight. Lohengrin refuses to be called that and asks people to call him The Protector of Brabant. Telramund and two of his noble allies are gathered, they planned to take down the mysterious knight (Lohengrin) and the three of them make a promise to unit against the mysterious knight. Episode two starts by going to Hungarians’ bases in and outside Brabant. This time the princess will be next to Lohengrin all the time. So, the player must defeat enemies plus protect the princess. The army of the king will be supporting the knight through his missions of destroying Hungarians’ bases. The player will be also collecting treasures and collect skill points. The player will be collecting repetition points in this episode. It will help the player to join more people to the army which will make the player more powerful which will help the player finish high level missions the the player progress. Repetition points will also help the player collect rewards from people and the king which will help to upgrade abilities for greater power. The last mission in episode two is to fight against the Hungarians’ king outside Brabant. The mysterious knight must defeat the Hungarian king in order to complete episode two. After defeating the Hungarian king, the knight, his princess , and the army will celebrate the victory and rest for few days. The princess wants to know the knight’s name and keep asking him, the knight refuses to mention the name and remind her of her promise to not ask him about his name or identity. Few days passes and a telegram arrives with bad news. Telramund and two of his allies took control of Brabant and put king Henry in prison. Episode two ends.
Episode three and the last episode of the game’s story title is Lohengrin The Protector of Brabant: Getting Back the Kingdom. The mysterious knight “Lohengrin” will head back to Brabant with the army in order to get it back from Telramund and will leave princess Elsa in a safe place with heavy guard. In his way back, the player will fight troops until the player reach the first boss who is one of the nobles that became an allies with Telramund. Player must defeat him before moving forward in the game. The enemies will get stronger as the player progress in the game. When the player reaches Brabant borders, the player will fight the second boss who is the second noble. After defeating him the player will cut through Brabant fighting troops until the player reach the castle where will meet and fight Telramund. At this time, a witch called Ortrud went to Elsa and tried to convince her that the mysterious knight is from an enemy empire and he is trying to get king Henry’s empire that is why he is hiding his identity and do not want anybody to know his name. Elsa get suspicious about her hero husband and head to Brabant. At the moment that Lohengrin enters the castle, he sees Telramund and start a brief conversation before they clash. At the end of the conversation Elsa enters the castle after she saw all the dead bodies on her way thinking that Lohengrin is trying to control the kingdom then she tries to stop the fight. Telramund take advantage of this moment and says that king Henry made him the duke after he knew the real identity of the mysterious knight. Lohengrin tells Elsa that he will reveal his identity after he defeat this evil guy Telramund. The battle starts. The player must win the final boss in order to complete the game. After Telramund is defeated, Lohengrin take King Henry out of the prison and gather with Elsa and people. The mysterious knight is going to reveal his identity in front of the king, Elsa and the people. Elsa broke the promise of not asking about Lohengrin identity; therefore, the mysterious knight reveals himself as Lohengrin, Knight of the Holy Grail and son of King Parsifal was sent to protect the unjustly accused woman. The rules of the Holy Grail says that knights of the Grail must remain anonymous, staying away from human sight if their identity is revealed. So, the time for Lohengrin’s return has come. Lohengrin leaves and never come back again. Elsa cries until she dies. But, the kingdom is free now and bigger than ever. The end.
